While I was on duty at the WA State Alert & Warning Center, my partner and I spent a lot of our time coordinating assets for a search being conducted on Mount Rainier.
Unfortunately, the search was suspended when a woman's body was found, presumably that of Karen Sykes, hiker and local author.
During my time on duty, my partner and I helped coordinate the use of mountain rescue personnel, search dogs, a helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft from the WA State Patrol (WSP)--and a chaplain.
It's a sad fact of life here among the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, that search and rescues don't always have a happy ending.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Karen Sykes family and friends.
