Reading--Important for a Healthy Civilization

Victor Davis Hanson (VDH) comments on why reading is so important.  Otherwise, societal decay ensues.

  1. I wasn't reading as much as I use to so I started taking a book to work to read during my lunch break. A testament to the downward slide is that my coworkers can't figure out why I would read a book without pictures in it.

  2. A story better than that is the department I work for sends us to school so we can take the tests for state certifications. A third of the shop can't go because they are high school drop outs and another third won't go because "they aren't ass kissers". Of the ones that can and will go to school most look at it as a paid vacation from work. Out of the last four sent to school I was the only one to pass the certification test. Two of them didn't even bring pencils for the test and laughed at me for bringing a calculator to use on the math section.

I believe part of it is a lack of professionalism in my organization but another part is the trend to cater to the lowest common denominator in our society.

    Sorry for the rant.

  3. I'm not sure "better" is the adjective I'd use to describe this story. :)

I hope I don't find myself on a cruise ship with some of your coworkers (alluding to today's post).
